Walking: A Step in the Right Direction

Thinking about adding more physical activity to your day? Walking can be a great way to get more active.

Walking is the most popular physical activity among adults, and it’s easy to see why. It requires no special clothes or equipment, and it’s free.

Like other kinds of regular physical activity, walking at a brisk pace also may offer health benefits, such as:

  • lowering your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes
  • strengthening your bones and muscles
  • helping you burn more calories
  • improving your fitness
  • lifting your mood

Walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, will help you meet the goal of 150 minutes per week. If you can’t walk for 30 minutes at a time, try breaking your activity into three 10-minute walks instead.
