Hospital Robotics: All About the Da Vinci Surgical System

Throughout time, surgical procedures have gotten quicker, less invasive, and safer. One reason for the improvements in surgical procedures is technology — including robotics. Robotic-assisted surgery is becoming more and more popular in providing the best care to patients.

One popular surgical system used today is the da Vinci System. How does this system work and what are the benefits offered to patients and surgeons.

What is the da Vinci System? Surgeons can use the da Vinci robot to assist in surgeries on patients and require only a few small incisions. Using the da Vinci, the surgeons can utilize the 3D high-definition vision system and small instruments to operate, giving the surgeon even more control.

The robot has four arms, one of which holds the camera that allows the surgeon to see the movements they are making in high-definition version. The other three arms hold the instruments being used. Utilizing an advanced robotics computer, this system allows the surgeon to remain 100 percent in control at all times to move and manage the arms and camera.

The da Vinci System can be used for a variety of surgeries, including those in the following fields:

  • Head and neck
  • Thoracic
  • Cardiac
  • Bariatrics
  • Colorectal
  • Gynecologic
  • General

But why do so many surgeons and patients opt for a surgical procedure using the da Vinci System? Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to complete the procedure through smaller incisions, which amount to smaller scars than traditional surgeries. Additionally, there could be less blood loss and fewer complications due to the precision the robot offers. And lastly, because robotic surgery is less invasive, patients can have a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time. Overall, the da Vinci System offers many benefits to both patients and surgeons.

New technology is being implemented in the medical field, including surgery centers, all the time. Robotic technology is continuously evolving to make a surgeon’s’ job easier and help make surgeries more successful. With the right technology and an experienced surgeon, a robotic procedure can be extremely beneficial and successful.
